Snorkeling in Pohnpei
Discover vibrant coral reefs, crystal-clear lagoons, and an incredible diversity of marine life on one of Pohnpei Surf Club’s guided snorkeling adventures. Whether you’re swimming alongside graceful manta rays at Manta Road, drifting over colorful coral gardens at Palikir Pass, or exploring the pristine reefs of Ahnd Atoll, snorkeling offers one of the best ways to experience Pohnpei’s underwater world.
With warm tropical water year-round, uncrowded snorkel sites, and experienced local guides who know the island’s reefs inside and out, every trip is designed to showcase the very best of Pohnpei’s marine environment.
Pohnpei's Snorkeling
Surrounded by one of the largest barrier reef systems in Micronesia, Pohnpei offers some of the Pacific’s most rewarding snorkeling. The island’s broad lagoon, numerous reef passes, and healthy coral ecosystems create an extraordinary variety of underwater landscapes, from shallow coral gardens and dramatic reef walls to deep channels teeming with marine life.
The island’s reefs support hundreds of species of tropical fish, colorful hard and soft corals, sea turtles, reef sharks, giant clams, eagle rays, and large schools of trevally and snapper. One of the highlights for many visitors is the opportunity to snorkel with Pohnpei’s famous black-morph reef manta rays, which are frequently encountered at Manta Road as they glide gracefully through the cleaning stations.
Our most popular snorkeling destinations include Palikir Pass (P-Pass) and Manta Road, each offering a unique experience depending on the day’s tides, visibility, and weather. For those looking to venture farther offshore, Ahnd Atoll provides an unforgettable full-day adventure to one of Micronesia’s most pristine reef systems, where crystal-clear water, untouched coral, and abundant marine life await.
Every trip is planned around the day’s conditions, allowing our experienced local captains to choose the safest and most enjoyable snorkeling location available.
Snorkeling with Pohnpei Surf Club
Activity Level: Moderate–Advanced
Our snorkeling trips to Palikir Pass and Manta Road typically last 4–5 hours, with both morning and afternoon departures available. Every excursion includes quality snorkeling equipment, chilled drinking water, fresh banana bread, and cold coconuts (when available).
Unlike many tropical destinations, snorkeling in Pohnpei takes place on the island’s outer reef and deep-water passes rather than sheltered beaches. Guests enter the water directly from the boat and spend their time floating over coral reefs and channels, making these trips best suited for confident swimmers.
For everyone’s safety, all participants should be comfortable swimming in open water and following instructions from our guides. Conditions can include currents, waves, and deep water, and there are no beaches or shallow standing areas at our snorkeling sites.
Requirements
Confident swimming ability is required.
Non-swimmers are not permitted to enter the water.
Snorkelers must remain in groups of at least two and stay close to the boat and any divers in the water.
Fins are required throughout the snorkel.
Children must be accompanied by an adult.
Our guides carefully assess weather, tides, and ocean conditions before every departure to ensure the safest possible experience.
For guests wanting to explore even farther and more remote marine habitats, we also offer full-day snorkeling trips to Ahnd Atoll and Pakin Atoll. The journeys are weather dependent, but when conditions allow, they offers some of the finest snorkeling anywhere in the region.
