Every Way to Experience Pohnpei

Surfers, divers, explorers, adventurers, scientists — everyone finds something here. Pohnpei is small enough that a single trip can take you from a dawn session at P-Pass to an afternoon snorkeling with manta rays, from the ruins of Nan Madol to a remote outer atoll most visitors never reach. Whatever draws you here, the same local guides and boats that know these reefs can get you to it.

Pick an experience below to see what a day looks like, or contact us and we’ll help you build a custom itinerary that combines a few — most guests do.

Surf

Pohnpei is home to more than numerous surfable reef passes, anchored by the legendary Palikir Pass (P-Pass) — one of the Pacific’s best right-handers, just 15 minutes by boat from our dock. Prime season runs October through April, with most days bringing clean, playful 2–6 ft waves and uncrowded lineups. It’s a trip built around variety and empty peaks, not just chasing the one big swell, though when a north swell lines up, P-Pass can deliver the barrels you’ve seen in the surf films.

Every session is guided by local captains who track swell, wind, and tide daily to put you on the best break available that day. Warm water year-round means no wetsuit, and boards are available to rent if you’re traveling light.

Snorkel

Drift over coral gardens at P-Pass, swim with Pohnpei’s black-morph “Black Beauty” manta rays at Manta Road, or venture out to the pristine reefs of Ahnd Atoll. Pohnpei sits inside one of the largest barrier reef systems in Micronesia, and our guided trips are built around the day’s tides and conditions to put you in the water at the right spot.

Trips typically run 4–5 hours with morning and afternoon departures, and every excursion is led by local captains who know these reefs firsthand. For guests who want to go further, full-day trips to Ahnd and Pakin Atoll are also available when conditions allow.

Dive

Quieter than Chuuk’s wrecks or Yap’s manta crowds, Pohnpei’s dive scene is coral gardens, drop-offs, and reef sharks — with Ahnd Atoll’s 100-ft-visibility walls and Manta Road’s resident black-morph mantas as the signature sites. Best conditions run May through early October; outside that window, we shift dives to the calmer sides of the island.

Boat dives run as single- or two-tank trips averaging about 5 hours round trip, with tanks, weights, and gear rental available. A valid certification card is required, and given there’s no decompression chamber on Pohnpei, we strongly recommend DAN insurance for every diver.

Nan Madol

Step into one of the Pacific’s great mysteries — a UNESCO World Heritage Site made up of over 100 basalt-and-coral islets built by the Saudeleur dynasty between roughly 1200 and 1500 CE, often called the “Venice of the Pacific.” At its center stands Nan Dauwas, the towering stone complex once used for war councils and sacred rites, still largely reclaimed by nature and untouched by modern development.

Reach it by van with a stop at Kepirohi Waterfall for a swim along the way, or by boat through mangrove channels and sandbars where rays are often spotted gliding by. Either route ends with a short walk over uneven coral paths — and often a wade through a tidal canal to reach the ruins.

Plan your visit to this UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Ahnd & Pakin Atoll

AHND ATOLL

A privately protected UNESCO Marine Biosphere Reserve about 10 miles offshore, Ahnd is often the highlight of a Pohnpei trip. The atoll is cared for by the Nanpei Family Estate, whose stewardship has helped keep its waters free of illegal fishing and its reefs among the healthiest in the region — expect grey reef sharks, eagle rays, and some of the only healthy giant clam populations left in the area.

A typical day runs 8am to 5pm and combines diving, snorkeling, and time on the beach, with huts to relax in and a BBQ spot available. Because it’s a marine protected area, no extraction of any marine life is permitted, and trips only run when conditions allow for a safe crossing.

PAKIN ATOLL

Pohnpei’s most remote outer atoll, roughly 30 miles offshore — a full day of open-ocean diving, snorkeling, and fishing along untouched reef walls, with the occasional left-hander for surfers when swell, wind, and tide all line up. The channel here is too narrow for our boats to enter the lagoon, so the entire trip takes place offshore along the reef edge and outer walls.

It’s a true outer-island adventure: fresh air, open horizons, and some of the healthiest, least-visited reef systems in Micronesia. Because the crossing depends heavily on sea conditions, we recommend checking in with us ahead of time to find the best weather window.

Explore Pohnpei

Beyond the water, Pohnpei is jungle waterfalls, mangrove paddles, WWII history, and local culture. Hike to Sokehs Ridge for panoramic views and a look at Japanese coastal defense cannons and bunkers from the war, cool off at Kepirohi Waterfall, enjoy a relaxing sunset boat cruise, or join a driving tour past the Spanish Wall, Kolonia Town, and the island’s carving village.

We also build custom trips for filmmakers, researchers, and anyone chasing something off the standard itinerary — if it’s within our capabilities on the island, we’ll help you plan it.

Not Sure Where To Start?

Most guests combine two or three experiences into one trip — a few days chasing swell at P-Pass, an afternoon with the mantas at Manta Road, a day out at Ahnd Atoll, and a stop at Nan Madol before flying out. Others build their whole trip around one focus, like diving the outer atolls or surfing the full season.

There’s no single “right” way to do Pohnpei, and conditions (tides, swell, weather) often shape the schedule more than preference does. Tell us what you’re into and how much time you have, and we’ll help you build the right itinerary around it.
